Seven ways to play with Godot

Small toys, each learnable in a minute, made overnight to answer one question: what might Godot be useful for? Three come from work you already do, four show its range. The first browser demo downloads the engine (about 39 MB) once; the rest reuse it.

From your own work

Two wooden mannequins on a small set, framed by a letterboxed camera
01

Shot blocking

Godot editor

A small set with two posable wooden mannequins, a sun you move by the hour and a camera with real focal lengths. Opened in the editor, Godot itself becomes the blocking tool.

Needs Godot on the laptop: brew install --cask godot, then follow the walkthrough in the report.

Still Water: stones of light drifting across a dark river towards an orange listening line
02

Still Water

Browser

A cousin of same river. Drop stones into a dark current; each one sounds as it crosses the listening line, then fades. Godot's mixing desk does the reverb and echo.

Story Stage: a picture-book meadow with a pelican, a raining cloud, a sun, a star and a little house
03

Story Stage

Browser · tablet

A picture-book meadow for small hands. Drag and fling the characters; tap one for its trick. Two children can hold two things at once.

For range

Draw to Build: ink ramps on dotted paper covered in marbles, crates and dominoes mid-blast
04

Draw to Build

Browser

Draw ramps with the mouse and they turn solid. Rain marbles, crates, dominoes, a chain bridge and a jointed figure onto them, then blast it all apart.

Ink Garden: a labyrinth reaction-diffusion pattern graded in teal and amber
05

Ink Garden

Browser

Paint ink and it grows into coral, cells or fingerprints, all run in shaders. G switches between five film looks, from sumi ink to print film.

Godot World: a lake at golden hour with standing stones and cypress trees in mist
06

Godot World

Mac app

Walk a misty valley with a lake and a stone circle. Move the day from dawn to moonlight. Real-time bounce light and volumetric fog, which a browser cannot do.

Download and open: see the one-line command in the report.

Marble Garden: a glassy marble in a walled garden with flowers blooming where seeds were
07

Marble Garden

Phone

Tilt your iPhone to roll a marble round a walled garden; seeds bloom where you collect them. In Safari, Share then Add to Home Screen, and it opens like an app.
